The Cactus Lamp

Finalist for Week 5: Physical Making of the Tulane School of Architecture Summer Design Competition

This lamp is inspired by the Pilosocereus Chrysostele cactus and mimics the undulating edges of the plant with its curving layered pieces. These plates are inspired by the layered pattern of the spikes on the specimen (shown in the analysis diagrams and the paper shadow models) and are tied together with twine. An interesting feature of the lamp is that the shade is actually hanging from the armature, so the plates can move and jiggle together.

Ideation & Inspiration

This lamp was an undertaking influenced by a long few months of studying my cactus subject, and through this process, I learned how to create something that is purposefully abstract.
